How to make a sign people actually read

A sign only has the second or two it takes someone to walk or drive past, so start with one short headline in the biggest text that fits — a few words, not a sentence — and put the rest on the subtext line below. High contrast reads best from a distance: black text on plain white is the safest choice, and the color-band or bordered background helps a headline stand out on a busy porch or fence. Bump the text size to Large or Extra Large for anything meant to be read from the street or across a room, and turn the emoji icon off if it competes with the words.

What belongs on the sign depends on the job. A for-sale or for-rent sign is useless without a phone number a passing buyer can read from the road; add a price or the bedroom count to filter out casual inquiries. A lost-pet sign needs your phone number, the pet's name, and the word REWARD. A garage or yard sale sign needs the day, the hours, and a bold arrow (→ or ←) aimed toward your street — print one for each nearby corner. Open-house signs are directional first: put the arrow on the copies along the route and the date, time, and address on the one at the house itself.
